August 15 Reflections
One Simple Question
This video really resonated with me as I heard how children from different generation's definition of fun changed. Most of the grandparents' activities took place outside and involved a lot of creativity. The parents' activities shifted, but for the most part, still involved both the outdoors and other people. Finally, the young children's activities involved electronic devices. I was amazed to hear how they described the time they spent on the electronics. One little boy in particular excitedly stated how he "watched 23 episodes in four days". Most episodes in a series are anywhere from 30 to 50 minutes. At a minimum, he watched three consecutive hours each day. At a maximum, he watched a little over five consecutive hours of television. I would guess he watched the show after school hours. This would mean for four days he did not spend any time outside.
The main reason this resonated with me is that I often find myself guilty. I let my two children spend a lot of time on electronic devices especially on days that I have too much homework. Luckily, I have a mom who will often pick them up and take them to her house. There, they spent a lot of time outdoors playing with the neighbors. I think that technology companies are targeting kids much more now. Apps are programed straight into the TV allowing them quick access to Youtube and Netflix. What makes it worse is my TV control has voice assist, so they do not even need me to look videos up. In this picture, you can see my son's joy as he plays Roblox.
Hijacked Family Dinner
The moms in this video are frustrated and I understand them COMPLETELY. Kids are often so emerged into technology that when they are spoken to they do not hear it. As a result, we repeat ourselves incessantly until we yell and that's when they hear us. I think that the use of the Pepper Hacker is a wonderful solution to surreptitiously hijack all of the electronic devices. At both my mom and my house we have a rule that phones are put away at dinnertime.
Gene-Edited Baby
Genetic modifications and experimentation have become more frequent in the past few decades. They were aimed at treating deadly diseases within their somatic cells, not his or her gametes. This new modification takes it to a whole new level. Chinese scientists provide reasoning behind these genetic modifications and even compare their work to other legal modifications. My issue with this topic is that the process has to be done via In Vitro Fertilization. IVF can cost thousands of dollars. Adding genetic modifications will only increase the price. I have not looked into the data that shows what socioeconomic status has the highest numbers of HIV, but it is more than likely that individuals with lower socioeconomic statuses are affected at higher rates. "his goal was not to cure or prevent an inherited disease, but to try to bestow a trait that few people naturally have — an ability to resist possible future infection with HIV, the AIDS virus". This means if successful HIV could potentially become a defining feature of a low SES.
25 Inventions of 2016
I think it is interested to look at the decrease in price of some of these inventions for examplem in 2016, the Chevy Bolt's MSRP was $40,000 today a 2022 Chevy Bolt's MSRP is $31,000. These price changes result from more competition in the market. I was really amazed some of the inventions like self driving tractors, the prosthetic for atheltes, and the orange sweet potato.
HIV Vaccines
One section in the article meantions how the vaccine may only "protect some people who get vaccinated". I think that some protection is better than no protection. Compared to the gene modifications, this is a much safer route in my oppinion.
Millennials & Technology
I did not find it suprising that 9/10 millenials own smartphones. Our lives are so interwined with technology. Phones are our alarm clocks, personal assistant, maps, and so much more. I can remember being in the 5th grade when we got broadband service in our home. Growing up my mom was always telling us to get off our phones because it would not benefit us in the future. Fortunately or unfortunately that is not the case. Our phones, now more than ever play an integral part of our lives.
Social media has grown exponentially. I often find it difficult to believe that people make a living [ a REALLY GOOD ONE] by being social media influencers. Thinking about the one simple question video I can see how kids have changed from playing video games to now watchin other kids and adults play video games online. My son loves a youtuber who uses a cat filter to play video games. If I let him, he would watch it all day long.
This article stops at millenials, but I wonder if they went down even one more generation the numbers would be. Tablets were a device that was around 50% in all four generations. I think this number would be much higher in younger generations. Electronic companies have created 'kid tablets' designed for learning, but realistically they're used for games and youtube. Tablets play not only a huge role at home, but also at school.
Lucero, you are so right. Technology has evolved and changed so much. Millennials are evolving with the technology and learning to use it to the best of their ability. Many social media influencers are millennials and Gen Z. Kids now know more about using technology than most adults do. My nephew is 9 and what he wants to be when he grows up is a "Youtuber". There are so many career opportunities in social media and focused around technology. It will only advance more from here.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that a HIV vaccine would probably be a lot safer and ethically sound than gene-editing. I feel that we know a lot more about how vaccines work and any possible negative affects that could come from a vaccine to where we as a society could administer such a vaccine only in safe and low-risk ways. The same can't really be said for gene-editing yet. Any and all repercussions of gene modifications may not be apparent until many years later and we don't know how drastic it may be.
ReplyDeleteI think it is fascinating to look at the social media influencers. There is so much behind the scenes work that we never see to reach the mega levels some of these influencers are at. My favorite influencers/stories are the people who just started posting videos or pictures for fun and then because of their natural personality their accounts exploded. I also think that more colleges should embrace the social media side of marketing and management.
ReplyDeleteLove your photo of a kid stars at the electronic on the bed--isn't one picture to explain the technology use in this generation?! HIV and gen edit article present two sides when we debate about the pro and cons for diseases as the technology serves as the great tool for human to decide. Again, it's not technology but how the people from the back scenes or stage decide. For example, we can use the knife as the means to make our life convenient but it also can be used as the tool to kill people. For me, technology progress could be the excuse to justify how we make the decision and then of course, ethical issues merge to test human believes.
